Julie Jilani Esterly

Co-founder of the Natural Deathcare Initiative, Teacher of Embodied Mysticism

Julie Jilani Esterly was drawn into the world of natural death, home funerals, and green burials after the profound experience of a friend’s community-supported death. She was inspired to co-found the Natural Deathcare Initiative to promote an alternative to hospital deaths and funeral home care. As an activist in the movement to re-sacralize death, she organizes death positive events and advocates for compassionate, environmentally and economically sound end-of-life care.

Julie has experienced a great deal of personal trauma and loss, including her mother’s recent death and husband’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, which allows her to empathize with the suffering of others. As a survivor of numerous auto accidents and medical procedures, she is keenly aware of how trauma, anxiety, and grief can bind joy. When speaking and teaching, Julie creates a safe, good hearted, and humorous atmosphere for exploring tender feelings.

A lifelong seeker, Julie has been fortunate to study with many great spiritual and somatic teachers including Ram Dass, Swami Satchidananda, Murshid Wali Ali Meyer, Charlotte Selver, Moshé Feldenkrais, Ron Kurtz, and Jean Houston. She was a chiropractor for 42 years. A member of the Sensory Awareness Leader’s Guild, she recently taught at the Sensory Awareness Conference on “Resilience and Stability in Challenging Times”. A senior guide and minister in the Sufi Ruhaniat International, Julie offers classes and workshops for modern mystics. Her goal is to share teachings that help people illuminate their gifts and empower them to create a more just world.
